Artist Statement
My first bicycle was converted into a racing equine spaceship of sorts. At my request, my father replaced the handlebars with an old junkyard car steering wheel. I draped a fuzzy blue toilet seat cover over the bike’s seat that became a horse saddle. At the back tire I fastened thick pieces of cardboard with clothespins to the bike frame. The cardboard clicked and hummed against the tire spokes like a racing motorcycle. When I rode I wore a white toy NASA space helmet ordered from a thick toy filled Sears Christmas catalogue. The helmet had spiraled antennae at both ears and I imagined having secret conversations with outer space. There was no distinction between worldly and other worldly, animal and machine, the natural and the technological. And I didn’t have to choose. I could be racecar driver, cowboy, moon walker, and Evel Knievel simultaneously or interchangeably. These childhood transformations and metaphorical thought processes continue to be the basis of my artistic works. continued...
